INQUIRY REFLECTION

I think my lesson went well.  It was an introduction to energy transfer utilizing prior knowledge the students learned in the last unit, which was motion.  As for starting websites, podcasts, blogs and whatnot, I am very new to this.  Therefore, I only have one link to a website I started to create.  The website includes a sample of the worksheet the students used with their answers and pictures of some of the sails they created.  The sails needed to move a suspended vehicle 2m.  From there I would introduce, and we would begin to discuss energy and energy transfer.  The site also continued to say for at least an hour, unable to save.  I hope it works.

  1. What a fun lesson! I bet the kids were very excited to be creating something in class. A video would have been fun as well!

    Having students explain what the fan was modeling is a great way to make sure that student understand the larger picture. I like your idea of using the internet to find real life examples.

    I am also new at most of this! The link did well to show student responses and pictures.

    Energy transfer is a concept that many don't really think about in our every day lives and for the students to be able to create a model that demonstrate the transfer of energy brings it to life. With this activity you have probably help many to understand how energy transfer is happening all the time all around us in the different things that we do and use in our lives.

  3. Thanks Jen and Mark! The kids enjoyed the lesson. It turned into a competition almost with the kids seeing who can create the most efficient sail. Anyway I need to take a leave of absence so good luck the rest of the way to both of you and everyone else enrolled.

    Neat experiment. I really like the student responses you posted. It was great to see their thinking on why it turned out the way it did, and what they could change to get it to work better. I like that they were able to use scientific words in their explanations like mass, etc. I am working on that with my 4th graders right now. I am trying to get tehm to say more force instead of harder etc. I think being able to speak scientifically with help keep them focused on thinking scientifically. Great pictures too.
